Be Like Miss Piggy – Claim Your Sexy

Updated: Jul 3, 2021

The Two Steps to being a Sexy Pole Dancer:

1) Learn to Pole Dance

2) Be You

When I was a small child. I was obsessed with Miss Piggy. I loved her karate chopping sass and glittery costumes. I thought she was beautiful. I took my Miss Piggy doll everywhere.

My neighbour was horrified that I carried around such an ‘ugly’ doll. So much so that she gave me a pretty looking doll to play with, in hopes I would forget about Miss Piggy. I dutifully thanked her, tossed aside the pretty doll and ran off with Miss Piggy.

My mom recently told me this story. As she scoffed at the snobby neighbour and giggled at my behaviour, it dawned on me why I thought Miss Piggy was beautiful. I thought Miss Piggy was beautiful, because Miss Piggy thought she was beautiful. I was too young to understand society’s messed up ideas of beauty. What I was drawn to was her confidence and self-love.

Obviously, the neighbour lady had never seen The Muppets!!

One of the biggest misperceptions of pole dance, is that you have to look a certain way.

This is not true.

Not Worthy

“You’re so ugly. Look how flat your chest is.” Taunts my high school bully, or as I call him ‘he who must not be named’.

Society has rules on who is ‘sexy’. I believe, this is one of two main reasons why women struggle to embrace their sexuality. We will talk about the second reason in the next post.

As you advance in pole, you spend more time off the ground and on the pole. This means more skin grip is required, which means less clothing. Showing this much of my body was horrifying to me. I already felt like I was trespassing in erotic choreo classes. I couldn’t look at my body in the mirror, especially with lights that showed off the best angles of my cellulite. I did not resemble society’s ideals of what a sexy woman looked like.

Claim It!

“Being comfortable with who you are is sexy,” Kelly Lyne, pole instructor of 14 years.

“People can be sexy wearing track pants and running shoes” Elisabeth Magalhaes, the Director of the Canadian Pole Fitness Association.

Nothing shows confidence more than a woman who owns her ‘sexy’. This is because of the many challenges society puts up against women in doing so. A lot of women comment that they were able to re-claim their sexuality through pole dance. For me, I think the ‘re’ should be taken away. I never claimed that side in the first place, at least not fully, not unabashedly with no restrictions. Through pole dance I am learning to explore and put my flag down. I’m learning to accept my cellulite and small chest, and other so-called ‘imperfections’.

How does Pole Dance Help?

How does pole do this? Ellie Hennessey, pole student and past pole instructor, says that for her it’s because she is in “the best shape of my life” and that the “safe and encouraging environment” has helped her gain confidence. This ownership brings her a sense of freedom and liberty. THIS is empowerment in its true form.

From pin-up posing to erotic dance moves, pole dance classes give you the tips and space to practice your ‘sexy’. One of the first things you learn in pole is the ‘sexy strut’. Kelly Lyne told me a story of how she taught a student to do this. After her first class of learning to strut, the student, a bus driver, would practice strutting up and down the lanes of busses during her break. At the next class she told Kelly, “for the first time in my life I felt sexy”. Kelly said that this was heartbreaking, because she was in her mid-50s. She had lived her entire life up until then not knowing or owning her sexuality. She met that side of herself through pole.

I love seeing women of all shapes and sizes empowering themselves on the studio floor. I love watching them become magnetic - not just taking up their rightful space, but owning it! I, myself, still continue to work on this ownership. Currently, my biggest challenge is leaving the comfort of my RBF expression to one of seduction. To me, facial expressions feel more intimate than the sexy dance moves. But with each class, I am feeling more at home in my skin and loving it.
